Originality sounds like a big word… Don’t worry! It is easier than you think.

Original does not mean you need to find a brand new idea no one has done before. 

It does not mean that you need new yoga moves for your audience, or a brand new method for self care, or inventing a new tool to be productive. 

Being original starts in Pinterest with something very simple: stop using widely available and frequently used, free stock photos from the big sites...

Let me give you an example. 

How many times have you seen a pin using this lovely photo? I absolutely LOVE the photo, the look, the chair… everything. Yes, I was myself tempted to use it too when I discovered it in Canva for the first time!

Word of warning: you would be amazed by how many times it has been used, by many different bloggers, for many different subjects. The result is one that many don’t imagine…

Pinterest recognises photos with an artificial intelligence system. Pinterest is very likely not to see new pins as fresh when they use this photo. What?!! Because it is overused. No longer fresh at all. Pinterest also gets confused as the pins with this photo can relate to many different subjects. So Pinterest may show this pin against pins with completely unrelated subjects.

So what does all of this mean? What can you do?

Relax!!!! You don’t.
Not everyone has time to plan, design and take curated, high quality photos. Not everyone has the photo skills to make them look professional. There is a solution.

That is your aim. 

To refine the design of your pins so that:

  • They work for your audience.

  • They look consistent so that your brand becomes recognisable in Pinterest.

Below I have included for you a couple of examples so that you see how to achieve this. These are two great online entrepreneurs, Louise Henry and Five Design Co. Both covered a similar subject, website design, Squarespace and online business blog in general. By the way, I recommend both for their super content!! Just fab!!!!!

Anyway, back to the point, you can always recognise their pins very quickly. They have a consistent and identifiable brand.

Careful!!! The above is not for you to copy the same designs. That would be missing the point.

The idea here is to see the consistency of look in their pins. How colours, graphics, fonts, logo presence, structure of the pin are similar and recognisable.

If you copy someone else’s brand design, you will not differentiate yourself. The point of being original is being different.

Train you eyes to see how people create strong visual brands to get inspired. That’s the way to do it.

If you look at Pinterest accounts with high volume of monthly unique viewers, they have some in common. They don’t have 10-15 boards… They have many more.

About 100-150 boards will provide plenty of boards to attract traffic. Find subjects that attract your ideal customer, not just related to your website subject. Let me explain through an example.

I was really hesitant at the beginning, when I started using Pinterest. I thought, ‘I got this! No need to get and learn an extra tool…’

But after a few weeks, I started understanding what is involved to do the necessary volume of pins and repins. So batching and scheduling the work was the way to go.

I then started using Tailwind. What a difference! These are the huge benefits I have discovered by using Tailwind:

  • I get most of my repins scheduled in the Tailwind platform.

  • Tailwind warns me if I have already repinned something (so it helps me avoid getting banned).
